Miri produces more than 130 tonnes of waste per day (Miri City Council, MCC). This is equivalent to the weight of 130 Proton Wiras. 20% of the total waste are paper products including newspaper, paper wrap etc. whereas 21% consists of plastic, rubber, iron, glass and textiles. How are we going to reduce the amount of waste taken to the landfill?
Brief Project Description
Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) worked together with the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (MHLG) to carry out a pilot project, “The National Waste Minimisation Study in Malaysia” to reduce the high volume of solid waste disposal in Malaysia. The three model cities / towns selected for the implementation of this project were Subang Jaya, Penang and Miri . Subang Jaya, and Penang have already started this project.
The Miri Pilot Project consists of 3 main objectives which are to establish a local recycling network , source separation of domestic waste and 3R activities in schools. The scope of the local recycling network and source separation include establishing the sustainable recycling system / network in the Miri City Council (MCC), and also to improve the capacity of the Local Authority (LA) officials to manage/monitor recycling activities, and to increase the collection amount of recyclable materials at source. The objective of the 3R activities in schools is to enhance 3R awareness in students, parents, teachers, and other stakeholders. This project will involve all local authorities, recycling stakeholders, related non-governmental organizations, schools, hotels, and individuals from every household (Krokop area).
