Study on National Register of River Basins – Phase 2 (River Basin Information Management System for Sg. Kuantan, Sg. Muar, Sg. Moyog and Sg. Sarawak River Basins)

Water is a valuable resource for sustaining life and for the development of a society. Population growth, increasing water utilization and degradation of water resources are part of reasons why proper management for river basins is needed.
As a consequence, the Government of Malaysia, through the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) and KTA Tenaga Sdn. Bhd. is developing a National Register of River Basins Information Management System (RB-IMS). The RB-IMS is a computer database containing pertinent river basin management information necessary to support integrated management of all river basins in the country.
Four river basins have been selected for this project, namely the Sungai Kuantan and Sungai Muar (in Peninsular Malaysia), Sungai Moyog (in Sabah) and Sungai Sarawak (in Sarawak).
Brief Project Description
This project has been organized in two phases namely, Phase 1 and Phase 2. Phase 2 started in January 2005 and is scheduled to be completed in July 2006.
Eco-Ideal Consulting is assisting the client in developing the RB-IMS for Sungai Sarawak basin in order to facilitate the management of the land and water related issues in the Sungai Sarawak River basin area, covered by the Kuching Division, from the river basin perspective. Various governmental and non-governmental agencies participate in this project as stakeholders.
The main objectives of this project are:
- To develop and implement the operational RB-IMS (River Basin Information Management System) for the four river basins (Sg. Kuantan, Sg. Muar, Sungai Moyog and Sg. Sarawak) complete with the RB-IMS Information Updating System for the DID
- To develop the river register and the river related GIS layers associated with the DID functions for the four river basins (as stated above)
- To develop the River Register for whole the country and formulate the Implementation Master Plan of the RB-IMS for the whole country.
