Research on contemporary collection and disposal practices specific to the various categories of solid waste described in the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act (2007) has steadily progressed following the completion of the Survey on Solid Waste Management in Selected Industries in February 2008. Under the Ministry of Housing and Local Government / DANIDA Solid Waste Management Component, Eco-Ideal is currently involved in gathering relevant information concerning existing waste management practices in high-rise buildings.
Preliminary research in preparation of this survey was conducted at 22 high-rise buildings located in the greater Klang Valley metropolitan area over a three day period in March 2008. A total of 13 sites were subsequently determined suitable for data collection purposes.
Interviews with management representatives at the selected survey sites were held between the 23rd and 29th of April. A wide range of information was gathered during these interviews, including detailed descriptions of existing waste management practices, waste storage systems and waste collection procedures employed by both municipal concessionaires and private contractors.
Eco-Ideal is currently involved in planning the next phase of survey-related activities. This phase will concentrate on collecting relevant data relating to the collection routes traveled by waste transporters.
