12 senior officials from Vietnamese federal and provincial governments visited Malaysia from 19th to 25th August 2007 on a study tour organized by Eco-Ideal Consulting Sdn Bhd and funded by the Government of Denmark, through the Danish International Development Assistance (DANIDA) as part of the ‘Environmentally Sustainable Development Programme in the Poor Urban Areas’ Component (SDU).

Vietnam wants to learn from neighbouring country, Malaysia, its experience and success in integrating economic achievement, social development and environmental sustainability, especially in regards to the urban development planning.

During the visit, the delegates met with officers from Economic Planning Unit, Department of Environment and National Solid Waste Department, Majlis Perbandaran Pulau Pinang, Majlis Daerah Kinta Selatan and Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya.

They were also taken on a trip to view various activities as well as a visit to Pulau Burong Sanitary Landfill in Pulau Pinang.

“We are interested in learning about Malaysia’s approach on planning, implementing and monitoring urban development, in particular with regards to provision of infrastructure and services, taking into considerations the economic, social as well as environmental requirements.

“We also would like to learn from our neighbour on how the responsibility of sustainable development is divided and delegated between the federal government and the provincial government, and how public participation in included in these processes,” said Head of Delegates, Nguyen The Hung, Vice Director of Department of Science and Technology in Vietnam’s Ministry of Construction.
The delegates included government officers from the Department of Science and Technology, Department of International Cooperation, Department of Planning and Statistics, Department of Construction, as well as representatives from Phu Tho Province, Ha Nam Province, Nghe An Province and Thai Nguyen Province.
